How can I calculate the height of the chuck lip?

To calculate the correct height between the bottom of the mandrel lip and the bottom plate, you can follow these steps:

  1. Start with the height of the flanged can (body only) in millimeters. For example, let’s say it is 116.4 mm.
  2. Subtract the thickness of the mandrel lip from the height of the flanged can. The thickness of the mandrel lip may vary depending on the countersinking depth of the cap. Let’s say it is 3.20 mm. So, 116.4 mm – 3.20 mm = 113.2 mm.
  3. Add the spring deflection to the result. Let’s say the spring deflection is 0.60 mm. So, 113.2 mm + 0.60 mm = 113.8 mm.
  4. Add the depth of the figure obtained on the lower plate (may vary). Let’s say it is 1.58 mm. So, 113.8 mm + 1.58 mm = 115.38 mm.
  5. Add the decrease in can height due to the seaming operation. Let’s say it is 0.60 mm. So, 115.38 mm + 0.60 mm = 115.98 mm.

Therefore, the correct height between the bottom of the pan lip and the bottom pan would be 115.98 mm in this example.
