The Anfaco-Cecopesca technology center presented, together with Angulas Aguinaga, the PROMOGAL Joint Research Unit (UMI) ‘Advanced technologies and digitalization for the integral improvement of the production of Galician mollusks’.

This ambitious project, which has an initial investment of close to 1.8 million euros, is co-financed by the Xunta de Galicia through the Galician Innovation Agency (Gain), and aims to promote the breeding and sustainable development of mussels in Galicia.

A second line of research will focus on improving the sanitary and nutritional quality of this mollusk and on the valorization of discarded mussels through the extraction of bioactive substances, while a third line will integrate artificial intelligence tools to support decision-making in production processes and thus increase the efficiency of production processes.

In this regard, Patricia Argerey, director of the Galician Innovation Agency, highlighted the relevance of this Joint Unit in the modernization of a strategic sector for Galicia, such as the marine industry and the fishing products processing industry, as well as the attraction to Galicia of a large company such as Angulas Aguinaga, a leader in innovation, which chooses to develop its R&D&I in Galicia with the support of the Anfaco-Cecopesca technology center and the support of the Xunta de Galicia.

For his part, Roberto Alonso, secretary general of Anfaco-Cecopesca, concluded by pointing out that “this is a strategic project for Galicia, addressing the main challenges of the entire mussel value chain, including important developments on the processes of cultivation, purification and processing, with levers of sustainability and digitization aligning perfectly with the current challenges”.
