Spain announced that it is exempting containers from the necessary labeling requirements if they are used to ship dangerous goods. In this way, they will be brought up to the same level as known for swap bodies and will be extended until 2025.

In the European Directive regulating the inland transport of dangerous goods, Spain has articulated a new national derogation to allow national derogations to be authorized. In general, when it comes to the transport of dangerous goods, it is required that there are plates-labels placed on the containers, except if it is a road-only operation.

Because of this exception, until January 1, 2025, it will not be necessary to affix label plates – and therefore to have free height – on containers regardless of whether they include packages if they are for road transport only.

According to the authorities, when a container other than a tank container is used to transport roads only and is not related to intermodal transport, it could be that it is a mobile container, a kind of box, and therefore does not need any plates or labels until it reaches class 1 or 7.

According to the opinion, the containers can be compared to swap bodies since both have safety conditions. However, containers enjoy greater guarantees due to their specifications and designs.
