Ball to begin discussions on possible closure of Wallkill, N.Y. beverage packaging plant
Ball Corporation notified its employees and the union, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement (CBA), of the possible closure of the Wallkill, New York plant.
Ball is concerned about the operation of its Wallkill plant, created in 1972 to produce a unique line of can sizes different from other brands. This has limited the ability to grow and invest in new technology or other equipment, which would mean that production would need to be transferred to another facility to meet customer demands. Therefore, the temporary closure of this plant is being considered.
The president of Beverage Packaging North & Central America, Kathleen Pitre, pointed out that closing a factory has never been an easy thing to do because it directly affects people. “Because of our extensive plant network, we have the ability to modify existing lines to produce these unique sizes. We are exploring how best to meet the growing and changing needs of our contract customers with our extensive plant footprint,” Pitre reiterated.
Ball Corporation has its 20 metal beverage container factories throughout the region to serve its many customers with the most sustainable packaging solution in the beverage supply chain.
