United States Steel Corporation broke ground on the company’s technologically advanced and highly sustainable steel plant in Osceola, Arkansas. The nearly $3 billion steel plant will be the most advanced in North America and the largest private project in Arkansas history.
David B. Burritt, chairman and chief executive officer of US Steel says, “Several years ago, we embarked on a transformational vision for US Steel. Now we celebrate as we take another important step toward becoming the steel company of the future. This facility is designed to bring together the most advanced technology to create the steel mill of the future that offers cost-effective, sustainable solutions for our customers.”
The new plant will be adjacent to US Steel’s Big River Steel. Together, the two facilities will be known as Big River Steel Works. The new plant is expected to generate 900 jobs in the area, along with thousands of construction jobs.
The new optimized steel production facility will feature two electric arc furnaces (EAF) with 3 million tons per year of advanced steelmaking capacity, a state-of-the-art casting and endless rolling line, and advanced finishing capabilities. This first use of endless casting and rolling mill technology in the United States will bring significant energy, efficiency and capacity improvements to the company’s operations.
