Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI) has announced that UACJ Corporation has been provisionally certified with the ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard certification for responsible aluminum production, sourcing and stewardship for the manufacture of aluminum sheet products at Fukui Works, Japan and UACJ (Thailand) Co, Ltd, Thailand.

Fukui Works is the first in Japan to achieve ASI certification, and the plants’ main products include rolled ingots, hot rolled, cold rolled and finished sheets that are intended for applications including packaging and transportation, including automotive.

Fukui Works’ melting, casting, rolling and finishing operations in Japan produce thin sheets for primarily can and automotive body sheets, and thick sheets are used to build LNG tankers and in aerospace applications. Thin sheets produced at Rayong Works in Thailand are processed and molded for a variety of uses, including sheets for cans, materials for automotive heat exchangers and fins for air conditioners. The plants have received Interim Performance Standard Certification under ASI’s Interim Policy regarding Audits, Audit-Related Travel and Coronavirus,

Fiona Solomon, ASI’s executive director, notes that “these rolling mill operations are an important link between upstream aluminum producers and a wide range of downstream companies that use aluminum in their finished products. The ASI dual certification demonstrates UACJ’s commitment to responsible production practices and sourcing for its customers. UACJ has a broad portfolio of aluminum product manufacturing sites internationally, and we look forward to the company’s future success in obtaining additional ASI certifications.”

Miyuki Ishihara, president of UACJ Corporation, explains that “UACJ is headquartered in Japan and has manufacturing facilities in Japan, other parts of Asia and North America. We produce a wide range of semi-finished aluminum products, including sheet and plate, foil, sheet, extrusions, and cast and forged products. We are proud to report that we are the first Japanese aluminum company to receive ASI certification, at our two key rolling operations, in Fukui and Rayong. This certification will help UACJ realize its group purpose, ‘to contribute to society by using raw materials to make products that enhance prosperity and sustainability’.”
