Pablo Martínez, president of the Official College of Dietitians-Nutritionists of Cantabria, explains that liquids in canned foods, such as syrups, oils, salted water, syrup or lemon, are generally not harmful to health, since all foods on the market undergo quality controls. Their main function is to extend the shelf life of the product, although the quality of the cans is crucial, since in those of lower quality, they could be harmful.
As for the canned liquids, oil, although not the same as olive oil, can be used in salads without problems, although many prefer to add tuna in its natural state with olive oil. Asparagus water, although salty, is not harmful, but does not provide benefits, so it is recommended to opt for water or infusions. Finally, the liquid of legumes, such as that of canned chickpeas, contains starch, which is not harmful.
