Samuel Adams has a new ‘spacey’ beer. It’s called Space Craft, and it’s brewed with hops that have been in space aboard the Inspiration4, one of SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft.
Last September, the hops used for this new beer travelled into space and orbited the Earth with the Inspiration4 crew for three days, close to the orbit of the International Space Station. To celebrate such a feat, the Boston-based American brewery has unveiled its new ‘Space Craft’, its special release marking the brand’s first use of space ingredients.
The mission made history, in part, by being the first to enter orbit without a career astronaut aboard. The mission consisted of Jared Isaacman, the billionaire CEO of Shift4 Payments; Hayley Arceneaux, a physician’s assistant; Sian Proctor, a geoscientist and science communicator; and Chris Sembroski, an aerospace data engineer.
Weeks before the launch Isaacman came up with an idea and launched the following question in networks. “Who wouldn’t order a beer brewed with space hops?”, asking brewers to respond if they were interested. Samuel Adams responded and, in addition to receiving the space hops to make it, Space Craft was named the official beer of the mission.
Space Craft will be available starting November 16 at the Boston brewery. You could also book online, but they are all sold out, before going on sale. This date is designed to coincide with the Leonids meteor shower, which is usually seen annually between November 6 and 30.
