SIMÓN GUTIERREZ, SALES MANAGER

ORBIS Corporation is part of Menasha Corporation, the third oldest family-owned manufacturing company in the United States. Mundolatas interviews Simón Gutierrez, Sales Manager – CSR LATAM at ORBIS, a company that is revolutionizing the can manufacturing industry with its sustainable and efficient solutions.
In the following interview we will explore the specific solutions ORBIS offers, how they align with the needs of can makers, and how ORBIS measures the impact of its solutions.

⦁ Could you share with us the history and trajectory of ORBIS in the packaging market. In your opinion, what are the most significant milestones that have marked its development?
ORBIS is a subsidiary of Menasha Corporation, the third oldest family-owned company in the United States. Menasha is celebrating its 175th anniversary since its creation in 1949. ORBIS is a leader in reusable transport packaging systems focused on solutions for our customers’ economic and environmental needs.
⦁ If we talk about innovation: How does ORBIS approach innovation in its products and processes?
Innovation is essential to the way we help solve our customers’ problems. We use a five-step process to help our customers solve their packaging problems. The diagram below shows this five-step process: Analyze, test, design, implement and evolve. The design is intentionally circular, as we continuously improve our customers’ supply chains.

⦁ On circular economy: could you describe for us how ORBIS’ mission aligns with circular economy principles and how this is reflected in your daily operations?
Circularity is a fundamental part of ORBIS’ business model, as “reuse” is a key part of the circular economy.
⦁ About ORBIS’ reusable plastic products: how can these products contribute to the circular economy and what impact have they had so far on the can manufacturing industry?
The can industry does a fantastic job of supporting the circular economy. The cans are manufactured and then shipped to various companies in a reusable system consisting of a plastic pallet, divider sheets and top frames. This reuse system has been in place for more than a decade around the world and, when the components of the reuse system reach the end of their useful life, they are returned for reprocessing into new reusable products: a solid example of how the circular economy should work.
⦁ Regarding ORBIS solutions: what specific solutions does ORBIS offer to optimize the material handling operations of can makers and how do they differ from conventional solutions?
ORBIS offers the aforementioned reusable system with pallets, separator sheets and top frames both for sale and as a service where ORBIS manages a pool on behalf of the customer; it just depends on the type of model and relationship that works best for the customer. In addition, ORBIS looks for opportunities in other aspects of the can supply chain, such as incoming materials and in-plant opportunities.
⦁ How does ORBIS relate to other companies and partners in the supply chain? What strategies do they use to strengthen these relationships?
ORBIS highly values its relationships with various stakeholders, including, of course, our customers, but also our suppliers, industry associations such as the Reusable Packaging Association (RPA) and the communities in which we operate. Our holistic approach to these stakeholders is based on the idea that, together with our partners, we add more value to our customers and our world. The strength of these relationships is built over time through constant interaction.
⦁ Your company maintains a clear commitment to sustainability: How is ORBIS committed to sustainability in its own production and operations and how is this commitment reflected in its products and services?
ORBIS’ commitment to sustainability is long-term. As part of Menasha Corporation, we have established environmental objectives for our company to reduce our impact on the environment.
⦁ To conclude, what plans does ORBIS have to expand or improve its solutions in the future and how do these plans align with current and future industry trends?
As a leading provider of reusable packaging products and services, we focus on industry trends and apply them to the five-step process we use to develop solutions for customers. We will continue to focus on solutions that meet customer needs. Last year we launched several new products to the market, for the can industry as an example we have the new 44×56 top frame that joins our expanded product line dedicated to aluminum can packaging.
