The Alcoa San Ciprián alumina refinery will carry out further reductions in its production levels as of August 1 in order to offset losses due to the high price of gas. Thus, the San Ciprian refinery will work at 50% due to high gas prices.
This operating level adjustment includes the 15 percent reduction already announced earlier this month. The factory states that “the production plan will not affect customer agreements, employment levels at the plant or any planned maintenance or investment”. The refinery will also take advantage of this reduction in production to carry out additional work at the facility, especially maintenance.
Alcoa further notes that “natural gas prices in Spain have increased more than five-fold since the beginning of 2021. As a result, the refinery has experienced a significant increase in its natural gas costs, which have gone from approximately $45 per ton of alumina produced at the beginning of 2021 to a price of around $245 per ton forecast for the third quarter of 2022.”
