Tinplate prices increase by 16%.

The average price of tinplate used in the manufacture of cans for the FMCG and food sector has increased by 16% in the last three months of 2020 thanks to a quality control order issued by the Indian government’s Ministry of Steel.

With a 16% increase in tinplate prices, prices to businesses will rise by 9-10%, as tinplate comprises 60% of the cost of a can.

This statement is from Sanjay Bathia, president of the Metal Container Manufacturers Association (MCMA).

According to Bathia the increase in the price of tinplate is due to the quality control order that the government wants to impose. This order has imposed mandatory BIS certification on both tinplate and steel products.
