These are the global trends in the metal packaging industry, which is meeting at the LatamCan conference, organized in Sao Paulo in Brazil from May 11-13, 2022.
From the painted or lithographed film to the finished package, SACMI develops the most complete range of Computer Vision systems on the market. Indispensable today on production lines, where they have completely replaced manual controls, these systems have evolved over time to achieve extraordinary performance in terms of speed, versatility and inspection capability.
The wide range of SACMI MVS solutions, towards AI
With a wide range of solutions available, depending on the specific product and process that requires inspection, the systems SACMI MVS (Metal Vision System) have evolved to offer a CVS (Computer Vision Software), an increasingly powerful and high-performance computer vision software, which also integrates computer vision algorithms. Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning, capable of interacting with the operator to simplify production management.
Visitors to LatamCan will have the opportunity to take a closer look at the ECLIPSIM range, the solution for the inspection of lithographic and painted films. These films, used in various areas of the packaging industry, can be inspected with ECLIPSIM with an accuracy of up to a tenth of a millimeter (up to 0.15 mm/pixel on films up to 1200×1200 mm). The machine is designed to cope with the extremely high speeds of painting lines, managing in real time the variety of coatings in terms of shade, reflectivity and color types, thanks to the images acquired by an HD camera and the patented SACMI Chrometriq-Linear illuminator.
Lids and boxes
ULYSSE is the“all-in-one” solution that differs from previous systems by integrating the electrical control board and all the wiring inside the image acquisition unit, for a more compact and user-friendly result.
Several configurations are proposed: for cap and can-end inspection, for quality control of twist-off caps and a third version, with RGB and ultraviolet, for inspection of the public face of easy-open caps.
Again, it is the patented SACMI Chrometriq illuminator that eliminates any distortion effect due to the shape, the reflective power of the surfaces and any other factor capable of generating false rejections or false acceptances.
The range is completed by the iCAN and iCANend solutions for inspecting respectively the inside of the casing and metal lids, which combine high inspection accuracy with the possibility to manage a multi-line configuration (up to 4 independent lines in parallel).
Finally, CONT-CHECK 360, the solution for quality control of can decoration and stapling. Controlled by CVS360 3D software, the system implements proprietary vision algorithms capable of perfectly reproducing the three-dimensional object in two dimensions, thus compensating for any deformation due to perspective, optics and spatial position of the object.
DMD, the digital revolution in metal decorating
DMD, Digital Metal Decoration, is SACMI’s response to the reduction of the average batch size that characterizes the metal decorating industry in various sectors. The multiplication of product codes and the need for frequent decoration changes, even in a single day, have greatly reduced the minimum efficient size of a conventional litho press.
Born from SACMI TECH’s experience in digital decoration for the ceramic and packaging sectors, DMD has been created to decorate sheets from 500×700 to 1000×1200 mm. The great advantage of the solution, which offers an output of up to 2,400 sheets per hour, is that it eliminates changeover time.
Modular and highly configurable, the machine is equipped with four color bars for four-color printing (CMYK). Additional bars can be integrated to handle specific pantone and special digital painting applications, with resolutions from 400 to 1200 dpi.
The possibility of surface treatment integrated in the line offers further advantages when DMD is installed alongside traditional decoration lines. In fact, DMD also allows selective paint-ink applications and its small size (less than 25 meters in total) facilitates its integration into existing installations.
DMD can be controlled by a single operator and is also an interesting solution from a sustainability point of view, thanks to its low installed electrical power and zero waste. Increased throughput due to greater versatility in format changeovers is accompanied by savings in inks and dies.
Already presented at LatamCan 2021 in Mexico, SACMI DMD has been successfully operating for two years in a leading company of the sector, where it has confirmed its performance in the field against expectations.
