For more than 70 years, Finland has been encouraging recycling through a program that rewards those who deposit their plastics.

One of the countries with the highest recycling rate worldwide is Finland, where it is estimated that more than 90% of cans and bottles are recycled. This achievement is due to a system implemented more than 70 years ago by the local authorities, which involves a deposit, return and refund system.

As reported by the local media Tamperelainen from Tampere in Finland, a great achievement has recently become known: an Icelandic citizen managed to return cans and bottles worth 800 euros. However, his record did not last for long.

An individual from Siilinjärvi took an image of the receipt for his most recent refund. The receipt shows that he obtained 1,143 euros in a single return of cans and bottles at a nearby Lidl store.

At the Pirkkala Prisma supermarket, which is known for giving significant sums of money for recycling, a remarkable event occurred. According to Pirkkala Prisma Group director Sami Hieta-aro, the largest returns have reached almost €1,000 in the past.

The “great devourer” is a machine present at this site, which has recycled more than 6.8 million cans. Most people who come to recycle do so in large quantities due to the ample storage space available to rural residents.

People in Finland who live in areas farther away from the commercial zone usually store all their recyclables for a year and then take them all together to the garbage can. In this way, they can obtain between 400 and 600 euros per year for the large volume of cans and bottles they deliver.
