The multinational company Novelis, which rolls most of the world’s aluminum, invested US$30 million to build a new annealing line for coffee capsules made of aluminum at its facilities in Plettenberg-Ohle, Germany. For the world leader in recycling, there is a great demand for solutions that help preserve natural resources and they have found the most immediate market segment is the growing demand for coffee capsules. The additional line will double the plant’s capacity for aluminum used in the production of coffee capsules, a market that is growing in response to increased demand for sustainable packaging solutions.

More and more coffee brands are choosing aluminum as a substitute for plastic to produce long-lasting coffee capsules. Aluminum is a perfect material for the circular economy because it can be recycled over and over again without losing its properties.

The company is developing innovative alloys, such as those used in the production of coffee capsules made from more than 80 percent recycled aluminum. “The investment demonstrates our commitment to serve as a trusted partner to our customers in the food and packaging industry and to create more sustainable solutions for consumers,” said Emilio Braghi, executive vice president and president of Novelis Europe.
