Leading provider of sustainable aluminum solutions and global leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, Novelis, announced that three of its North American plants producing material for the beverage can market have been awarded performance standards certifications by the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI).
The multinational is broadly committed to the circular economy thanks to a strong focus on this issue, along with leading levels of recycled products across the entire product range, which shows us that every day it wants to become the “leader” of the aluminum industry.
The certifications for the Greensboro, GA, Berea, KY and Warren, OH plants increase Novelis’ ability to meet growing customer demand for sustainable aluminum solutions in the beverage packaging market. The company has been delivering ASI certifications since August 2021 worldwide.
“This certification is the latest step in our sustainability journey and demonstrates our unwavering commitment to providing sustainable aluminum solutions to our valued customers,” concluded Tom Boney, executive vice president and president of Novelis North America. “Aligned with our purpose of shaping a sustainable world together, we aim to collaborate with and inspire our suppliers, customers and partners along the entire value chain to engage in these responsible practices.”
ASI certification is verified by safety checks, fire tests and chemical checks to ensure that the organization is in compliance with the Performance Standard. “Our goal is to become certified for access to the ASI world and to generate accountability with our clients and encourage active participation,” said Suzanne Lindsay-Walker, vice president of ASI Certifications. “Adherence to the standards provides a clear indication of the care of companies and the commitment shared by certified partners to human rights, climate change, the environment or the movement of waste,” the directive added.
The Novelis plant in Pindamonhangaba, Brazil, has also obtained ASI Performance Standard Certification. Novelis has also achieved ASI Performance Standard and ASI Chain of Custody Certifications at all of its 11 European manufacturing sites and all Novelis Korea rolled aluminum products are now sourced and produced in accordance with the ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard. Regional certification programs are tailored to the customer’s regional requirements.
Finally, Novelis aims to be a carbon neutral company by 2050 or sooner and to reduce its carbon footprint by 30% by 2026. Increasing the amount of recycled aluminum in its products is at the core of the company’s carbon reduction strategy.
