Multinational Novelis achieved ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) certification at three of its North American production facilities. Specifically, these would be its headquarters in Kentucky, Georgia and Ohio, respectively. The plants produce recycled ingots and sheets for the production of can bodies and can ends.
Novelis North America at its facilities in Berea (KY), Greensboro (GA) and Warren (OH), USA, recycles used beverage cans (UBC) into aluminum ingots. The decision reinforced the investment made by Novelis to improve the automated manufacturing processes of the UBC lines through advanced technological change.
The company previously achieved dual ASI performance standard and chain-of-custody certifications at all 11 European manufacturing plants and at its Geumjeong, South Korea facility. In addition, its plant in Pindamonhangaba, Brazil, also achieved ASI Performance Standard certification.
The ASI certification program was developed through a lengthy process of consulting many stakeholders, making it the only comprehensive voluntary standards initiative for the aluminum value chain. The Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles to address sensitive sustainability issues in the aluminum sector. It has 59 criteria under three pillars: Environment, Social and Governance that address key issues such as biodiversity, indigenous peoples’ rights and greenhouse gas emissions.
“We sincerely congratulate Novelis on achieving these three Performance Standard Certifications among its North American operations. These plants are important nodes in the North American beverage can market, with one of the plants recycling approximately 20% of the region’s UBC. We are delighted to see novelis’ ongoing ASI certification journey continue to extend across its global operations,” said Fiona Solomon, managing director at ASI.
Tom Boney, executive vice president and president, Novelis North America added, “This certification is the latest step in our sustainability journey and demonstrates our unwavering commitment to providing sustainable aluminum solutions to our valued customers. Aligned with our purpose of shaping a sustainable world together, our goal is to collaborate and inspire our suppliers, customers and partners along the entire value chain to engage in these responsible practices.”
“Novelis aims to achieve ASI certification at all of its plants worldwide. The completion of these ASI certifications is part of our ongoing commitment to be a responsible partner with our customers and work with them to achieve their sustainability goals. Adherence to the standards provides a clear indication of the care and commitment that certified companies share with respect to human rights, climate change, the environment and circularity with respect to aluminum manufacturing,” concluded Suzanne Lindsay-Walker, Vice President, Sustainability.
