The importance of sustainability in the Spanish shopping basket is a growing trend. Consumers have become more sustainable in their purchasing decisions. This was confirmed by 93% of those surveyed in a study carried out by the can manufacturer Bali, which revealed that Spaniards are undecided between two different beverages and that the sustainability of the packaging would be a decisive element for 92% of those surveyed when making a decision.

Another element that consumers take into account is the origin and ingredients. These issues also apply to new beverages, with 88% of Spaniards declaring that they will stop consuming beverages whose containers cannot be 100% recycled, according to the study.

Among the products most consumed by Spaniards in the last year were natural soft drinks with 49%, sparkling water as an alternative to soft drinks with 27%, light or low-alcohol spirits with 23% and kombucha with a 14% share of demand.

“The aluminum can meets those requirements demanded by the respondents. But those are not the only attributes it possesses, as the can can can also be recycled an infinite number of times and, once recycled, can be converted into another identical container in just 60 days. All this makes it the ideal package for all these new trends in healthier and more sustainable beverages,” says Myriam Galmés, Ball’s Commercial Manager for Southern Europe.

Indeed, Spaniards are already willing to consume a wide variety of canned beverages such as coffee-based drinks (33%), water (32%), flavored water (27%), sparkling water (26%), non-alcoholic cocktails (25%), cider (18%), wine (12%) or kombucha (11%).

In addition, when choosing among these new beverage trends, Spaniards mainly look at the composition of the beverage (39%) and the brand that markets it (21%), but also at other aspects such as whether the packaging is light and easy to carry (14%) and 100% recyclable (13%), as well as its design (12%).
