Lisbon becomes the first European capital to implement a city-wide reusable cup system with a local container return model. The initiative, which began on June 27 at two historic kiosks in the city, is the result of collaboration between the City Council, the company TOMRA, and the hospitality association AHRESP.

The system allows consumers to receive their drink in a reusable cup by paying a refundable deposit of 0.60 euros, which is easily recovered by returning the cup at designated points, without registration, using only a card or mobile phone.

Around 25,000 cups are used each night in Lisbon’s leisure areas, but until now there was no infrastructure for their collection and reuse. The new model, based on TOMRA’s “Rotake” technology, includes digital tracking, cleaning, logistics, and redistribution. The goal: to reduce plastic waste and promote more sustainable habits.
