With the recycling of 73.6 percent of aluminum, Italy ranks first in Europe in terms of recycling. This was revealed in a recent report presented at a conference organized by the National Consortium of Aluminum Packaging (CIAL), where it was highlighted that 100 percent of Italian production with this metal comes from recycling.

Specifically, this percentage in the Italian country would be equivalent to 60,200 tons of aluminum, which is considered a milestone since it has significantly surpassed the targets set for 2025 by the European Union (EU) of 50 percent.

In 2022, the recycling rate for aluminum beverage cans alone reached 91.6 percent, which is a record high. This meeting, which was held under the theme of Aluminum recycling: Italy leads Europe. Risks and opportunities in new economic and regulatory scenarios’. aims to publicize the results derived from the activity of aluminum packaging recovery, coming from waste collection in Italy.

Giusi Carnimeo, general director of CIAL, said at the forum that “aluminum is the exchange material par excellence, as it is 100 percent and infinitely recyclable.” and added that “It is capable of retaining its structural properties forever, which is why more than 75 percent of the aluminum ever produced is still in circulation.

It should also be noted that one hundred percent of Italian aluminum production comes from recycling, achieving energy savings of 95 percent and avoiding greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 423,000 tons of CO2.
