Aluminium Can Recycling was a record in Europe in 2018

Can manufacturers (members of Metal Packaging Europe) and their aluminium suppliers (members of European Aluminium) recently announced that the overall recycling rate of aluminium beverage cans in the European Union, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland increased by more than 2% from 2017 (74.5%), to reach an all-time high, they mention, of 76.1% in 2018.

The total amount of aluminium recycled “increased by 37,000 tonnes to an impressive 457,000 tonnes, representing a total GHG emission saving of 3.7 million tonnes CO 2 eq”.

This, they say, is equivalent to the amount of GHG emissions of a medium-sized European city of 400,000 inhabitants such as Palma de Mallorca, Szczecin or Bologna.

Aluminium in cans has the ability to continue to circulate forever, as aluminium can be recycled infinitely. That’s how 75 percent of all aluminum ever produced is still in circulation.
