The accuracy and service life of punches and forming tools are critical to the overall cost of can production. Growing demand, including the shift from plastic to aluminium packaging, is challenging the industry to produce as many cans as possible with as little material as possible.

To achieve this, it is crucial to use high precision punches and dies to minimize the thickness of the containers. Danobat, as a global supplier with more than 65 years of experience, develops and supplies machine tools specifically designed for the manufacture of the tools used in the can forming process.

ALL MACHINING SOLUTIONS, WITH OR WITHOUT AUTOMATION

The can production process as a whole requires different punches and dies, and each of these parts requires a specific machining technology. Thanks to the high-precision LG grinding machines, the IRD grinding machines developed by the German company Danobat-Overbeck, and the hard turning technology of Hembrug Machine Tools, Danobat offers solutions that provide high precision and high production efficiency in all production environments. Thus, it responds to all the challenges currently faced by any toolmaker and in particular hard machining to obtain punches and dies with sub-micron accuracy in as few operations as possible.

HIGH PRECISION GRINDING SOLUTIONS WITH IRD AND IRD-C MACHINES

T he Danobat-Overbeck IRD-400 grinding machine for high-precision internal, external and radius grinding is specially designed for machining dies and punches as well as cutting tools with a max. dia. of 200 mm and a max. length of 400 mm.

The IRD-400C is the perfect solution for the tool shops of canmakers who, working in 3-shift operation, need to retrieve punches and dies with the highest precision.

Both solutions allow precise machining and finishing of carbide ironing die and redraw die. This means, for example, that the entire profile of a redraw die can be ground from the back end through the radius and up to the face in a single bind.

The IRD-400 is capable of achieving a roughness ≤ 0.03 (Ra), making subsequent manual polishing operations unnecessary. And these dimensional and form accuracies of ≤ 2.5 microns mean that the tools can be used directly, without the need for any additional machining operations.

Danobat-Overbeck has been providing solutions for Ball, Ardaghgroup, Wa[1]llram, Crown, Can-Pack, Ceratizit, Roeslein, Great China Metal, Hyperion, ShenxingGroup, Nampak, etc. for more than 40 years all over the world.

HIGH PRODUCTION IN EXTERNAL GRINDING WITH THE LG SERIES

Precision grinding is also inherent in Danobat’s LG series external grinding machines, which are ideal for high production rates with high precision. With a carbide punch having a hardness of 90 HRA, these machines achieve roughnesses of 0.2-0.4 microns with dimensional and shape accuracies of ≤ 2.5 microns.

COST REDUCTION AND EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENT

T he claim that Danobat allows you to use all kinds of techniques is proven by the Mikroturn® 100 hard turning lathe from Hembrug Machine Tools. The fully hydrostatic technology machine has a superfinishing unit. The ejector is previously subjected to a turning operation and then finished with the superfinishing unit. This solution makes it possible to obtain a roughness of Ra ≤0.05 microns and a surface free of turning marks with a form error ≤ 1 micron. Furthermore, in this case, the part is finished in a single machining operation.
