The multinational Hydro has announced that it will invest about EUR 30 million in the Karmø aluminum smelter. This investment will involve modernizing and upgrading the power supply system and the anode manufacturing plant at Hydro Karmøy. This investment will further strengthen the plant’s position as a supplier of low-carbon aluminum for the European market.

Specifically, the investment involves replacing the plant’s 22 kV switchgear to ensure the safety of the power supply and upgrading part of the anode stranding line, including an automatic conveyor system that will eliminate traffic and improve safety.

“We are investing in Hydro Karmøy’s future, demonstrating our commitment to low-carbon, hydropower-based aluminum production for the European market. The investment will involve modernizing the plant and ensure a strong power supply for decades to come, as well as improving the plant’s safety,” says Ola Sæter, Hydro’s director of primary production.

Hydro Karmøy also produces 270,000 tons of primary aluminum per year. The plant is a world leader in energy efficiency and production line operation. The new investment will be a modernization of the AP18 production line.

“This investment will make the Karmøy plant more robust and further enhance Hydro Karmøy’s competitiveness,” Sæter adds. Both Hydro’s internal resources and external suppliers will contribute to the project, which is scheduled for completion in 2024. The project will start in the fourth quarter of 2022 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
