The Spanish company GBFoods, known for its production of Gino and Pomo, has just announced the expansion and start-up of a state-of-the-art tomato canning line in Tema.
The food manufacturer decided to spend US$5 million on the construction of the latest canning technology that will help reduce the use of foreign inputs to produce its own products.
Artur Carrula, president of Agrolimen, parent company of GBFoods, noted: “GBFoods is committed to investing in Africa and Ghana, with the support of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Ministry of Trade and Industry, we are working to identify locations for two contiguous farmlands of 7,000 acres each on which we will build two factory farms, each with an integrated factory to process tomato concentrate that we will use in Ghana and also export to other African countries taking advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.”
GBFoods has planned an investment of around US$70 million between the two projects, which will lead to the creation of 5,000 jobs for the country’s citizens, providing a huge amount of foreign exchange to the Ghanaian market.
David Kofi Afflu, general manager of GBFoods Ghana concluded by saying that “in addition to the tomato processing line, this state-of-the-art facility also has a curry processing line. We believe in Ghana and remain committed to drive investment to increase our presence in the county. Today’s commissioning is a demonstration of our deep level of commitment to this cause and we will not relent in this effort.”
