The Santander City Council, in collaboration with the International Foundation ‘Every Can Counts’, has promoted the campaign ‘Your Can in Yellow’ to encourage the recycling of cans and containers on the beaches of the city.

The Councillor for the Environment of Santander, Margarita Rojo, and the director of the Foundation ‘Every Can Counts’ in Spain, Pablo Garcia, presented this Wednesday at a ceremony at the Second Sardinero Beach this campaign that will run until August 11.

Rojo has highlighted the importance of this initiative for the natural environment of Santander. “We want to raise awareness among our neighbors and visitors about the need to keep our beaches clean and encourage recycling, because a small gesture such as depositing a can in the yellow container can have a great impact on the preservation of our environment,” said Rojo.

During the campaign, environmental educators will tour the main beaches of Santander with collection backpacks, raising awareness among bathers about the importance of recycling beverage cans and other containers correctly.

These educators will also conduct surveys for the study ‘Recycling habits on urban beaches’, which aims to analyze recycling behavior on beaches and help municipalities improve waste management in public spaces.

Pablo García, director of ‘Every Can Counts in Spain’, underlined the positive impact of can recycling. “By depositing cans in the yellow garbage can we ensure their recycling, which saves 95% of the energy needed to produce a new can from virgin material. This small gesture contributes significantly to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.”he explained.

The action is based on a study that reveals that, although more than 70% of people recycle in the yellow container, 36% still do not do it on the beach. With this campaign, the City of Santander and ‘Every Can Counts’ seek to increase the recycling rate in these natural areas, promoting a more sustainable and clean tourism.
