According to the latest Ecoembes Business Plan for Prevention and Ecodesign (2021-2023), in these three years 10,400 measures have been implemented to manufacture more sustainable packaging that have led to the improvement of more than 5.8 billion of them.

Some examples of these measures have long been a reality in supermarkets and in our homes. Aluminum tuna can closures are a consequence of this eco-responsible design, since aluminum is more easily recycled than other elements. In addition, this aluminum foil is lighter than a conventional lid and less raw material is used in its production.

Ecoembes claims that eco-design has saved 104,556 tons of raw materials, and reduced electricity and water consumption by 11,229,202 megawatt-hours and 124,422,812 cubic meters, respectively.

The redesign of containers, with greater storage capacity or reducing the environmental impact is something that is emphasized although Spain is still far from places where canned water is a daily reality, especially in public establishments such as soccer stadiums, museums or airports where plastic is no longer found in vending machines.

Ecoembes assures that between 2021-2023, companies have also considerably increased their commitment to making packaging more easily recyclable, incorporating previously recycled material or indicating where it should be deposited once it has been consumed.

On the other hand, measures aimed at reuse are still in the minority: 303 of the total, a figure that reflects the importance of continuing to move towards a more circular model, where reuse plays a more prominent role.
