The practice of crushing aluminum cans before throwing them in the trash is common; however, we are not doing any good for the environment, but quite the opposite, as explained by the environmental blog Greenmatters.
One of their articles explains that: “although many think they are doing the world a favor by deforming cans, they are not entirely correct. The idea that crushed cans take up less space, making room for more trash, is not exactly ideal for the environment in general”.
Greenmatters assures us that crushed cans often disrupt the sorting process during waste management, making it more difficult and complicated. Recycling becomes more complex when these cans fall into the wrong piles of material and contaminate other recyclable waste, according to aluminum experts.
