“For years, the packaging of our tinned food has been recyclable, as aluminium is a 100% recyclable material. Now we are going one step further and replacing the plastic packaging of our 3 and 2-packs with a 100% recyclable cardboard cover with 50% recycled material. With this change we will stop using 170Tn of plastic at European level”.

This text is part of the campaign of Bonduelle, the vegetable preserves brand, which reinforces the brand’s “6 commitments” to sustainable agriculture and respect for the environment. One of its commitments is precisely this: to have 100% sustainable packaging across its entire range of canned food – corn, peas, green beans and sprouts – throughout Europe.

If with aluminium cans, an infinitely recyclable material, they already complied with the precepts of sustainability, today they are going much further by adopting a new packaging, produced in 100% recyclable cardboard. But they also use a vegetable-based ink for printing and a glue that is easy to remove and does not prevent recycling. “The new packaging is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified, which verifies that the materials used to make the carton come from sustainably managed forests,” according to the company’s website.

With this new packaging, the company will stop using 170 tons of plastic per year in Europe (25 in Spain). One of the main novelties is that the new cardboard covering uses 30% less material than a package that completely covers the cans.

“At Bonduelle we have a triple commitment to food, people and the planet. Climate change is a concern for the Spanish population and the company is constantly innovating with this triple commitment in mind,” said Jorge Alonso, Marketing Director of Bonduelle Ibérica. “Therefore, with our new campaign ‘100% committed, 100% sustainable’ we have reaffirmed our roadmap to be the best company for the planet, and we want to raise awareness in society about the need for each of us, through small gestures, to help preserve the environment.”

This announcement is part of the pact announced at the end of last year: B! Pact presented by Bonduelle in October 2020, a global framework that reflects Bonduelle’s triple commitment to the planet, food and people, with the aim of promoting healthy and sustainable food.

More engaged in a Europe more concerned about sustainability

This campaign covers the whole of Europe in a framework where all brands adhere to contain healthier products with more sustainable packaging. And aluminium has been the material par excellence.

Recycling is one of the most important precepts in the whole chain that leads us to respect (and rescue) the environment. And in the midst of a Europe that is more concerned about climate change, Spain happens to be one of the countries that takes this problem most seriously. This is according to the latest Eurobarometer of the European Commission, which indicates that 90% of Spaniards surveyed are really worried.

In 2020 Spaniards deposited almost 19 kg of plastic in one of the more than 388,000 yellow bins in Spain. Compared to the previous year, 2019, this represents an increase of 8.5%. These figures were recently provided by Ecoembes, the non-profit environmental organisation responsible for the management of light household packaging.

Not only this, in the last two years (2018-2020) the companies that are part of Ecoembes implemented 9,380 eco-design measures, aimed at reducing the amount of plastic and other materials used to manufacture packaging, as well as incorporating recycled material in them, among others.

Bonduelle is a group founded in France in 1853 by Louis Bonduelle. Today it is present with 56 self-production plants in Europe, North America and South America. It is present with the brand in 100 countries.
