Good forecasts for the recycling of aluminum containers. Recycling rates for metal packaging have again reached a record high and appear to be firmly on track to exceed their annual target, according to data released by the Environment Agency for the third quarter of this year.
Specifically, 39,974 tons of aluminum containers were collected for recycling, an increase of 15% compared to the same period last year (34,700). Between January and September, a total of 121,277 tons of aluminum containers were collected for recycling, which translates into 9% more than last year.
Tom Giddings, general manager of Alupro, notes that “the high recycling rates experienced in 2020 were a short-term trend as a direct result of the COVID-19 blockages, it is reassuring to see that the record volumes have continued into 2021 and show no signs of slowing. Assuming volumes remain high, we could see recycling rates exceed 70% for all aluminium containers and over 80% for aluminium beverage cans by the end of the year, a great achievement for the industry.
