Aluminerie Alouette obtained ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard V1 (2017) certification for the operations, maintenance and services required for the production of primary aluminum at its Sept-Îles, Quebec, Canada facility. The company obtained the Performance Standard Certification in July 2020.
ASI has also announced that the Alouette Aluminerie plant was certified to meet aluminum recycling chain-of-custody standards. To date, it is the largest smelter in the Americas and has the capacity to produce 600,000 tons of aluminum per year.
According to Fiona Solomon, ASI’s executive director: “We congratulate Aluminerie Alouette on achieving ASI CoC certification for its smelting operations in Sept-Îles, Quebec. With this certification, the company’s consortium of several ASI-certified members demonstrates the overall collaborative spirit of our members to create a responsible aluminum value chain. The remarkable production capacity at the plant also provides a significant boost to the availability of ASI-certified aluminum for downstream aluminum users.”
Claude Gosselin, president and CEO of Aluminerie Alouette, added that “the fact that aluminum, especially Canadian aluminum, is a solution to climate change cannot be overstated. This new certification adds value to our metal for our stakeholders’ customers, who are increasingly looking for green aluminum. Our entire team and our partners can be proud of this news. Everyone works hard every day. This is a key hallmark in today’s globalized world.”
The ASI certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standards initiative for the aluminum value chain. The ASI CoC Standard establishes requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain in various downstream sectors.
The implementation of the ASI CoC Standard links the practices verified in successive steps of the supply chain, certified under the ASI Performance Standard, to the products produced by ASI Certified Entities. The CoC Standard also confirms that appropriate policies and a due diligence process are in place to identify and address critical supply chain issues such as corruption, human rights abuses, materials from conflict-affected and high-risk areas in the supply chain, and responsible sourcing.
