Alumar has recently announced that the full resumption of aluminum production will be effective next year. The consortium is thus expanding its investment to include the remaining 40% of its primary aluminum production capacity.

The primary aluminum production operation of the Maranhão Aluminum Consortium has given the green light to expand the €65 million investment announced in September 2021 to €148 million. The goal is to restart one more production line.

According to Helder Teixeira, director of Alumar, full resumption should occur in the first quarter of 2023. This operation is expected to generate more than 2,300 direct jobs and will give priority to employees laid off in the last decade, starting in 2013.

In addition to restarting Alcoa Corporation’s capacity to produce 268,000 metric tons of aluminum per year, the remaining 40% of the total capacity of 447,000 metric tons/year, interrupted in 2015 mainly due to the high cost of electricity tariffs in Brazil, will be restarted.
