It has been 12 years since the multinational Alcoa landed in the Brazilian municipality of Juruti, in the western state of Pará. In this area near the Amazon River, the company maintains a giant bauxite mine and manages the local port. In addition to the concern for business, the company is looking to the future of the city, from investments in various areas, such as education and improved learning facilities.
The company plans to expand its Senai facility in Juruti. Specifically, it is an area of 9,000 m² donated by Alcoa, in which modern laboratories will be installed to support learning and improve local employability rates.
Genesis Costa, manager of Alcoa Juruti says that “our operation has been an innovative mining project since its inception. In addition to the care and investments in health, safety, environment and infrastructure, we contribute to the increasing participation of the Juruti population in this project, through training and capacity building, and can generate opportunities to join the company’s staff”.
In 2009, the mining company invested in the use of a vocational education system even before the start of operations, which has allowed about 9,000 people to be qualified in the most diverse modalities. All those who completed the courses are evaluated and join the talent pool of Alcoa and Senai. More than half of the students were absorbed by the company.
