On April 22, Avenham Park in Preston (Lancashire, United Kingdom) became the stage for a very special art installation designed to raise awareness about the importance of recycling.
The artwork, named CANvas, has been created with more than 700 recycled drink cans and is part of an initiative promoted by the non-profit environmental program Every Can Counts, in collaboration with Preston City Council.
The local artist Shawn Sharpe, known in the northwest region for his murals and for leading creative workshops for both children and adults, was responsible for bringing this colorful mural to life. Sharpe painted the mural during the traditional celebration of the Preston Egg Roll, a family event where thousands of people gather to roll chocolate Easter eggs down a hill, as well as enjoy music, workshops, and street performances.
The design of the CANvas depicts hands holding a smiling planet, symbolizing that every gesture for environmental care counts. The work aims to highlight aluminum’s ability to be recycled infinitely and encourage attendees to recycle their cans not only during events like the Egg Roll, but at any time and place.
Throughout the day, a team of Every Can Counts ambassadors roamed the park collecting used cans in special backpacks and engaging with the public to promote a more conscious recycling culture.
Once Earth Day is over, the installation will be moved to its new home: Eco Town, an educational and interactive space within the Farington Waste Recovery Park.
Every Can Counts is a unique alliance between drink can manufacturers and the recycling sector, with an ambitious goal: to achieve 100% recycling of cans.
