According to the results of a recent survey, citizens in Spain consider recycling to be an essential measure to address the negative consequences of climate change. Therefore, they would be willing to pay up to 5.2% more to buy sustainable packaging.
The European Association of Cartonboard Manufacturers, Pro Carton, conducted a study in which more than 5,000 European consumers (including 1,000 Spaniards) were surveyed about their environmental stance and their views on packaging. The study addressed issues such as climate change, deforestation and global concerns such as war, racism and the economic crisis.
The sample reveals that there is great concern for the environment in Spain. According to the study, 76% of consumers now recycle more than they did a year ago and consider it an important action to help reduce the negative impact of climate change.
In addition, the vast majority (81%) believe that not enough efforts are being made to halt its negative effects. Among the favorite actions to combat this concern, recycling received 78% of votes, followed by the use of fewer human-made products such as plastic (70%) and the use of more renewable natural materials (65%).
77% of Spanish respondents feel confident in choosing packaging materials that are recyclable. This figure is lower compared to other countries such as Italy (87%), UK (86%), Germany (83%) and France (78%), indicating the possibility of a gap in the market to drive brands and retailers to include clear recycling instructions on their packaging. In addition, less than half of Spanish consumers (44%) believe that brands and retailers do not offer enough green packaging options and would be willing to pay 5.2% more for products with sustainable packaging.
In addition, consumers show a preference for products packaged in renewable materials such as cardboard, especially in countries such as Italy and France with 92% and 90% respectively. Spaniards also have a high tendency to choose products in cardboard instead of plastic with 89%, demonstrating their confidence in this fiber-based packaging material.
