Britvic has been able to significantly increase its canning capacity by optimizing the balance of its production line. This has resulted in a significant increase in revenues and profits.
Line View Solutions, a software company that specializes in manufacturing, has secured £5.4 million (US$6.8 million) in funding to improve the capacity of Britvic’s factory in Rugby, UK. The money will be used to implement a technology called line balancing optimization (LBO).
The line balancing technique is a way of organizing production that seeks to equalize the working time between the operator and the machine, with the objective of achieving an optimal production rate in relation to the assembly process time. In this regard, Line View collaborated with Britvic on a comprehensive training project on this technique over a two-week period.
Following the implementation of the program, an immediate increase in capacity of £2.9 million (US$3.6 million) could be observed and an additional gain of £2.5 million (US$3.1 million) was also discovered through improved control optimization.
Miguel Ferreira, spokesperson for Line View, expresses his satisfaction for the opportunity to work with the Britvic team and provide immediate and sustainable solutions for their production lines before market demands increase in the summer.
Most companies have a wealth of opportunities available to them, yet they find it difficult to turn theory into concrete action. Therefore, it is common that a comprehensive and rapid training program is required in order to maximize the benefits and increase the company’s capacity.
The company hopes that by showcasing the success of their collaboration with Britvic, they can inspire other companies in the food and beverage industry to consider how a leveraged operation can increase efficiency. This is especially important as the sector is facing major challenges due to inflation, labor shortages and supply chain problems.
Line View was a tool that enabled Britvic’s controls engineering team to acquire the skills and understanding necessary to recognize and apply the Lean Business Operations methodology in all areas of the company.
Fulfilling the summer need
A team of Line View experts worked in collaboration with Britvic to implement production improvements and ensure that the lines could meet market demand during the summer in terms of can volume.
Eight Britvic team members were provided with customized LBO training to develop the necessary skills. This approach included improving control, accumulation and speed on all can production lines, which allowed them to identify and take advantage of LBO opportunities throughout the company.
This led to the fact that they are now in a position where they can improve capacity on several lines while continuing to improve production efficiency through a commitment to constant improvement.
According to Rugby’s site manager at Britvic, Paramjeet Pahdi, it has been possible to increase the plant’s production capacity and minimize production line interruptions.
The main priority is to have prepared our team to take advantage of all opportunities in all aspects of our business. Line View offered an interesting course and ensured that we have full understanding and confidence to lead this process in the future.
