Multinational Tata Steel received the Bala Gulshan Tandon 2021-22 Award of Excellence from the Federation of Mineral Industries of India. These awards confirm the high standards of sustainable initiatives and reinforce Tata Steel’s commitment to achieving excellence through sustainable mining.
Specifically, Tata Steel’s Noamundi iron ore mine (NIM) was awarded the Bala Gulshan Tandon Excellence Award for best overall performance by the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries (FIMI). The award was presented at FIMI’s 56th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on September 2, 2022, in New Delhi.
Shirish Shekhar, head of Noamundi, Tata Steel and Kamlesh Mahato, president of Noamundi Mazdoor Union, received the award on behalf of Tata Steel from Alok Tandon, secretary, Government of India, Ministry of Mines. During the ceremony, Shirish Shekhar, head of Noamundi, Tata Steel was also honored and received a certificate for his significant contribution to helping the mine achieve excellence through sustainable mining.
In July 2022, Tata Steel’s Noamundi iron ore mine also earned a 5-star rating for sustainable development for the sixth consecutive year. In addition, Tata Steel Mining’s Sukinda chromite mine received the Abheraj Baldota Environment Award organized by FIMI in New Delhi and a Silver Medal at the 8th edition of the India Green Manufacturing Challenge 2022 (IGMC), organized in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, Pankaj Satija, managing director of Tata Steel Mining, said after the appointment that at Tata Steel Mining, “we are working to improve our energy efficiency, water conservation, biodiversity protection, ethnic preservation, and other aspects of sustainability. Our employees are at the center of this process, while the community around our units is helping us achieve the goals.”
Finally, the Abheraj Baldota Environmental Award was presented for the mine’s outstanding contribution to the national goal of sustainable development through the conservation of the environment and natural resources. The award was received by Manish Mishra, Head of Corporate Affairs, Tata Steel, and Ankan Mitra, Head of Regulatory Affairs, Tata Steel on behalf of the Company. The Silver Medal was awarded to the mine for its comprehensive progress in sustainability. The award was received by Sushanta Kumar Mishra, Senior General Manager of Tata Steel Mining.
