U.S.-based Ball Corporation has received Cradle to Cradle® Certified Bronze certification for its aluminum cup. The coveted award from the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, a San Francisco-based non-profit organization, is given to industrial manufacturers who manage their production processes in accordance with the Cradle to Cradle® closed-loop principle.
Winning this award is only within the reach of pioneering industries in their sector, so the multinational Ball is delighted with this new recognition. Designed to be lightweight, yet durable, refillable and recyclable, the aluminum tumbler is suitable for cold beverages and is available with customer-specific imprints and in four sizes: 9oz, 16oz, 20oz and 24oz. Another advantage is that it simplifies cleaning and the multinational pays dividends for the environment with its sale.
The Cradle to Cradle® approach contrasts with the well-known “Cradle to Grave” linear production principle, in which materials are often extracted from nature only to be discarded as waste, without regard for the long-term protection of natural resources. In contrast, the Cradle to Cradle® philosophy advocates designing products capable of reintegrating into biological and technical cycles. The challenge of this production philosophy lies in the ability to plan the life of the product within a closed material cycle and to choose the right materials to be returned fully and safely to the biosphere or to be reused as quality resources. Strict adherence to this philosophy has earned Ball the Certified Bronze award for its innovative, infinitely recyclable and environmentally sustainable aluminum cup.
