The Zapiain cider maker has won four medals in the largest international cider competition held in Great Rapids (Michigan), the Great Lakes International Cider and Perry Competition (GLINTCAP).

This is a pioneering competition in fermented apple and pear beverages that was born in 2012 and in this edition nearly 1,200 products were submitted to be evaluated by a professional jury -many of its members are trained as ‘pommeliers’, which is the apple (and pear) world’s equivalent of the better known ‘sommelier’.

The competition is divided into 17 categories that serve as a showcase of everything that is being done in the sector at international level; the most traditional ciders are joined by the modern ones. Zapiain, which was presented in two of the categories, won three gold medals in Natural Cider and another gold for its ice cider, Bizi-Goxo, which came second in its category. It was also recognized as the international cider maker of the year.

Michigan has also been talking about trends in this beverage and both in the United States and in other parts of the world the canned product is claimed
Zapiain, from the Basque Country, already has several of its ciders in this format. Its Enbata canned cider can be found in cans. This cider is presented in a beautifully illustrated can of 44 centiliters, natural, unfiltered, unstabilized and unpasteurized, produced under the D.O. Euskal Sagardoa. They also sell cans of Euskal Sagardoa ciders, among others, Isastegi (33 cl), Oiharte (again, 44 cl) and Saizar (Red Bay, in the same format). According to its creators, Red Bay is “a cider elaborated with apples from the country, using varieties created in the land, improved and preserved for thousands of years”, they explain, served in a format that is “a bet for the future of the sector”.
