TFS (Tin Free Steel) containers, also known as chrome plate, are made from a base steel similar to that used in tinplate, but instead of being coated with tin, they are protected by a chromium and chromium oxide coating. This type of material was introduced as an alternative to tinplate to reduce dependence on tin and its price fluctuations.
TFS containers are suitable for a variety of applications, including deep-drawn containers and closures, as well as for products that are not overly aggressive, as TFS can be lacquered to improve its corrosion resistance. However, they are not suitable for welding by conventional electric welding methods, which limits their use in certain types of containers, such as “three-piece” containers that require welding. In such cases, alternative methods such as resin-glued seams or thermoplastic cements can be used.
