The Welsh Government has launched a 12-week public consultation, open until November 10, to define the implementation of a deposit return scheme that will include glass bottles and prioritize reuse over conventional recycling.
With the second-highest recycling rate in the world, Wales seeks to go a step further and consolidate the transition to the circular economy, betting on a model that, according to international evidence, reduces costs for producers, facilitates decarbonization, and offers greater environmental benefits than recycling alone.
The consultation will analyze the role of glass in reducing waste, improving recycling outside the home, and generating new economic opportunities linked to reuse. The process was designed after extensive engagement with industry stakeholders, through specialized workshops and a national conference.
Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies highlighted that the initiative is inspired by the country’s industrial tradition: “By placing reuse at the heart of our strategy, we are not only combating waste, but building a model that other countries can adopt. This scheme will drive innovation, create green jobs and help tackle the climate and biodiversity crisis.”
The consultation will remain open until November 10, 2025, and full details are available on the official Welsh Government website.
