The British government has announced the imposition of new economic sanctions against Russia. As a result, Johson’s government has banned exports of high-end luxury goods to Russia and imposed new import tariffs of 35 percent on iron and steel imports from Russia and Belarus, in addition to existing tariffs.

Specifically, the tariffs cover all products in chapters 72 and 73 and include iron ore, along with other products such as copper, aluminum, machinery, cement, glass, cereals and vodka. The 35 percent tariff will apply in addition to any anti-dumping duties and safeguards.

The trade association UK Steel has welcomed the swift action taken by the UK government following the EU ban on steel imports a few days earlier, although it added that these new tariffs may have unexpected impacts.
