According to recent data published on the National Packaging Waste Database by the Environment Agency, aluminum packaging recycling volumes showed further growth in the second quarter. With a 3% increase compared to the same period in 2023, the industry is firmly on track to exceed annual recycling targets again.

In total, 45,246 tons of aluminum containers were collected for recycling. This included 29,831 tons through curbside collection systems, drop-off points and on-the-go systems (+4% year-on-year), as well as 13,156 tons recovered from incinerator ash (IBA).

So far in 2024, 84,222 tonnes of aluminum packaging has been collected for recycling in the UK, representing approximately 59% of the volume needed to meet this year’s annual target (140,431). The market is already exceeding the target and appears to be on track to report excellent recycling rates for the fourth consecutive year.

Tom Giddings, CEO of Alupro, commented, “Despite a year of disruptions, delays and political changes, it is positive to see that aluminum container recycling volumes have continued to increase. This is particularly impressive considering the growth in tonnage of material placed on the market so far in 2024.

“If we continue at this pace, there is no reason why the industry cannot exceed targets and, once again, achieve record rates. This success reflects a nationwide behavioral change and consumer proactivity with regard to aluminum packaging recycling, driven primarily by creative initiatives and incentives along the supply chain.

“As usual, the only downside is fluctuating PRN prices, which remain excessively high and therefore have the potential to derail progress in the coming months. Going forward, EPR reform will be critical to remove this as a common obstacle and support the continued progress of the industry. This, together with the advancement of wider policies (such as the introduction of a variable rate deposit return scheme), will generate momentum towards the long-term goal of a 100% recycling rate for aluminum packaging in the UK.

“In the meantime, it is essential that consumers continue to follow recycling best practices, and that educational initiatives, such as our MetalMatters and Every Can Counts programs, continue to expand to inspire positive recycling behaviors nationwide.”
