The U.S. Council on Foreign Relations warns of the looming catastrophe of Trump’s decision to impose 25% tariffs on aluminum from outside the country.

This institution has explained that the industry relies on a global supply chain for manufacturing of all types, from cars to appliances and metal packaging, to construction.

Tin-melted steel is used for a wide variety of packaging: food cans, beverage cans, food cans of all kinds and even aerosols for both home care and personal care. Not only that, many of the measures that were being implemented to reduce single-use plastics will eventually be slowed down. Both the use of aluminum cups and bottled water in aluminum containers was already being imposed in some North American states. The United States currently imports 70% of this molten steel according to the Can Manufacturers Institute.
The institute recalled that Trump already did considerable damage with the tariffs imposed in 2018 that led to the closure of nine tin-plated molten steel lines in the United States, as manufacturers switched to other types of steel or simply shut down. As a result, only three tin-plated steel lines remain open in the nation.

Large canned food brands are in dialogue with their suppliers, but price increases are imminent, especially for small producers of canned and premium beverages, with the obvious harm that this will entail.

The Consumer Brands Association are calling on Trump to change course on this tariff policy that hurts the entire industry.
