Centro Brasil Design awarded Trivium with the ‘Design for a Better World Award’ for its cologne refill bottle. This solution offers a lightweight, recyclable design for the original bottle, which also comes equipped with a patented dropper to prevent spills. This innovative packaging includes a patented dropper, designed to fit the original glass bottle.

Boticario decided to take a sustainable approach to its packaging and developed an entirely new bottle, containing a significant amount of recycled materials. This led to a reduction in the overall weight of the original packaging, which was achieved mainly by direct printing. The brief for this project was based on concepts developed by Boticario’s in-house design team that challenged suppliers to find a refill solution for regular packaging.

“We were up for the challenge and developed a concept using a special aluminum bottle with a dedicated dropper to allow the end user to easily refill regular glass. The concept was tested on the Boticario filling line and passed several protection tests, including shelf life, vacuum, sealing, leakage and transportation,” they noted from the company.

In addition, an examination of its characteristics was carried out to verify whether the recommendation to reuse the material had a lower impact than other similar items, usually made with plastic. That said, it was also decided to include a QR code on the packaging to provide information about the contents and handling instructions that encourage the customer to participate in the recycling process.

This project represents a successful example of improving performance and reducing environmental impact, while improving consumer functionality with the intuitive use of the dropper. Thanks to the natural properties of aluminum, it provides protection against oxygen and UV light, as well as prolongs service life.
