The Galician group Calvo has been forced to close its cannery in Galicia as a result of the transport strike. The reason, the problem it has been having for days to guarantee the product out of the factory and the incoming supply. In addition, all kinds of materials are missing: from oil to tuna, pallets and cases. Until now, the cannery had been using the surplus stored in the cold stores, but as it was unable to supply, it has decided to stop.
For the time being, the shutdown has only affected the Calvo plant in Carballo. The group has other production centers and offices in Spain, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, Guatemala and El Salvador, marketing canned products in 65 countries and fleets fishing in the Atlantic and Pacific. It employs 5,000 workers worldwide, 10% of whom are in Spain.
The employers’ association Anfaco, which groups together fish and seafood canneries, has warned of the impact of the carriers’ strike, blocking the reception of raw materials and the service to its customers, in addition to the uncertainty caused by the war in Ukraine. In fact, a large part of the Spanish agri-food industry will be paralyzed if a substitute for sunflower oil, used in the manufacture of a multitude of products, from pastries and preserves to sauces and fried foods, is not found within four weeks, and whose reserves will not last more than a month.
