A year ago, Backus launched ‘Cans that transform’, an initiative that was born with the objective of promoting the recycling of cans by giving them a second life, transforming them into industrial pots to be delivered to common pots programs in Peru.
This project, which to date has benefited more than 19,000 people in various regions of the country, has earned an outstanding mention in Fast Company’s 2022 World Changing Ideas awards, which recognize and highlight products, concepts, companies, policies and designs that drive change and support the growth of social innovation, addressing social inequality, climate change and public health crises.
In this regard, Sara Alcántara, Director of Corporate Affairs and Governance of Backus Ab InBev, said after the recognition that “this is a mention to the work of all Peruvians and the integrated work we have been doing with our partners. In Backus we always seek to respond to the great challenges facing our country and ‘Cans that transform’ reaffirms our commitment to sustainability, with the care of the planet and all Peruvians” to which she adds that “it is a great responsibility to continue working together, inspiring and instilling the culture of recycling in all Peruvians, to create a future with more reasons to give”.
The project, which started as a long-term initiative, has had an indescribable impact on the entire country is. To date, together with its strategic allies Hombro a Hombro, Nestlé, Placor, LATAM, Ciudad Saludable and Cencosud, it has managed to collect 700 kilograms of cans, which has allowed the creation of 304 industrial pots, of which 141 have already been delivered with food.
The 2022 World Changing Ideas has been called one of the most important venues for showcasing the most creative and promising companies and initiatives that inspire people to work on solving problems that affect the world. In this way, the project worked by Backus, through its brand Cristal, has been recognized by editors and reporters of the company, among more than 2,997 applicants. Backus is studying the possibility of implementing similar projects to the recently awarded project.
