Toyo Seikan Co., Ltd. has developed the lightest aluminum beverage can in the world. in the world. It is the 190 ml 202 SOT (Stay-on-Tab) can, which uses only 6.1 g of aluminum per container. This can has been chosen by Coca-Cola for its Georgia brand canned coffee products. 185 g, and mass production began in the Kanto region in August on a limited basis.

The lightweight design of the world’s lightest aluminum can is made possible by reinforcing the base of the can using compression reforming technology (CBR). This marks the first mass production of the 190 ml 202 SOT aTULC (Aluminum Toyo Ultimate Can) with CBR technology.

In addition, this can won a joint award for Toyo Seikan and Coca-Cola Japan in the Packaging Technology category at the Japan Packaging Competition 2024.

Based on Toyo Seikan research as of August 2024. The weight is calculated when the can is empty, excluding any film laminated to the body or lid of the can. Part of the Georgia product line uses these cans, specifically for its coffees:  Georgia Emerald Mountain Blend, Georgia Golden Drip Bito, Georgia Platinum Black, Georgia Prime Blend.

Using CBR technology, Toyo Seikan has reduced the weight of its 190 ml diameter 202 SOT cans from 7.0 g to 6.1 g, a 0.9 g reduction. This lower weight also results in an 8% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per can compared to existing cans. If CBR technology were implemented in all aluminum beverage cans where applicable, it is estimated that GHG emissions would be reduced by 40,000 metric tons annually (based on Toyo Seikan’s current specification aluminum beverage can manufacturing records).
