Toyo Seikan Co., Ltd. has succeeded in creating the lightest aluminum can on the Japanese market for 204 mm beverage cans with an easy-open closure. Using CBR technology, the bottom of the can has been strengthened and its weight reduced, which will also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Mass production has started last April 2024 in two factories and will then be expanded to others across the country.
The use of CBR technology has enabled Toyo Seikan to reduce the weight of 350 ml cans by 1.5 g, from 11.7 g to 10.2 g, and the weight of 500 ml cans by 2.0 g, decreasing from 15.0 g to 13.0 g. These easy-open cans are commonly used for alcoholic beverages and have been optimized thanks to this technological innovation.
According to recent statistics, greenhouse gas emissions have decreased by 9% in smaller beverage cans compared to the current 350 ml and 500 ml cans. In addition, it is estimated that if CBR technology is used in all aluminum beverage cans where possible, up to 40,000 tons per year of pollutant gas emissions could be reduced.
