In the Netherlands, the first publicly available Tomra R1 is already a reality. It was launched at the TOMRA Collection Nederland office in Apeldoorn on the occasion of a special charity initiative.
This can filler can deliver more than dozens of cans of soft drinks at the same time. The delivery of these amounts is a novel system in the Netherlands. For every drink returned for recycling, Tomra will donate five euro cents to raise money for vital medical equipment for the local community.
Once in the vending machine, the user no longer has to hand over the beverage containers individually, as is still the case in supermarkets. With the R1 it is possible to drop a bag with up to 100 cans at a time into the feed opening. “Just open the flap of the vending machine, empty the bag and close the flap. The machine immediately starts counting, sorting and compacting the packaging. A receipt is then issued. This quick and clean way of recycling is the first in the Netherlands,” explains Mark Delwig, sales manager of TOMRA Collection Netherlands.
As well as being a good cause, the collection campaign also serves as a starting point to raise public awareness of the introduction of a deposit on cans from 31 December 2022. Thereafter, a deposit will be charged for each can, as with PET bottles, at the time of purchase. The goal of the measure will also be to collect and recycle the approximately 2 billion cans that are sold annually and thus avoid more garbage. These deposits are already active in Germany, Finland, Norway and Denmark.
