More than a dozen 12-packs of aluminum cans per person end up in U.S. landfills annually, which equates to more than $1 billion in wasted material, according to data from the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI).
Tim Ebner, Vice President of Communications and Marketing at the CMI, warned that this loss occurs despite the growing demand for aluminum and the need to strengthen the national supply chain. “Accepting the recycling status quo is no longer an option,” he stated.
To reverse this trend, the institute is promoting the Every Can Counts US program, which has recovered more than 330,000 cans in its first year and promotes access to recycling at major events such as Mardi Gras in New Orleans, where 145,000 cans were collected and more than $3,000 was donated to community organizations.
The CMI insists that a reform of the recycling system and the expansion of deposit refund programs (DRS) are key to improving aluminum circularity and preventing billions in resources from ending up in landfills each year.
