After more than 25 years of development and perfection, a couple of years ago big news for the beverage industry broke out: A can that cools itself in a sustainable way. It’s not science fiction. It’s a technology they call MicroCool, a dream that beverage manufacturers have been trying to create for 70 years.
It was the Californian company Joseph Company International, specialized in technology and food, who achieved it with a system that allowed a beverage can to cool itself.
Perhaps little did we know about it, but the pandemic has accelerated all processes, developments, technologies. The beverage sector has been no exception. Covid has accelerated interest in innovative packaging solutions that allow consumers to enjoy outside of beverage dispensing facilities.
Joseth Company International President and Founder Mitchell J. Joseph also stated on the occasion of the international launch of the FIZZICS brand of coffees utilizing the technology, “The coffee category continues to grow worldwide and the need to develop off-premise solutions for our customers has never been greater given the unprecedented loss of on-premise sales as a result of the pandemic. Our organization has received a record number of inquiries regarding our Chill-Can technology and combining it with the FIZZICS brand for the international market is a perfect match. We are seeing more and more that consumer habits are forever changing and Chill-Can® is the right package and technology to meet the changing landscape of our industry.
HOW CAN A CAN COOL ITSELF?
At the heart of all the advances made has been Joseph Company’s revolutionary patented Chill-Can® and MicroCool® technology, which automatically cools the beverage of your choice in one minute, without using electricity, energy or ice.
“In the self-cooling Chill-Can, the beverage can has a built-in Heat Exchange Unit (HEU) that contains the technology necessary to cool the beverage in approximately one minute. Upon activation, the patented technology activates environmentally safe recovered Co2 in the HEU leading to the cooling of the beverage,” their website states.
“It is 100% recyclable and does not introduce new CO2 into the atmosphere”. Such has been the success, they say, that “enquiries for packages using The Joseph Company International’s patented Chill On Demand™ technologies have reached an all-time high in the last eight months as food and beverage companies around the world work to understand consumers’ new off-premise preferences for ready-to-drink products in a rapidly changing marketplace that has been severely impacted by recent global events”.
The cans – whose commercial name is Chill-Can – have won awards from NASA (the US space agency), an award from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and another from the US Army.
The Joseph Company is currently building a $20 million beverage production and technology complex in Youngstown, Ohio, USA, which will enable the production of billions of self-cooling cans and associated containers annually.
The St. Joseph Company is led by founder, CEO and President, Mitchell J. Joseph, who is a fourth generation member of a family of bottling and distribution since 1921: Dad’s Old Fashioned Root Beer and Squirt.
